Do
- Do your research properly: what type of property you want and the local market, schools, customs and language.
- Seek professional advice: get an independent lawyer to complete due diligence, ensuring all titles and licenses are correct.
- Find out the costs of buying: avoid nasty surprises by ensuring you know all the fees and taxes before signing.
- Check about building proposals in the local area: a beautiful sea view now might soon be a tower block.
- Try to ensure you find an English-speaking, local lawyer, preferably referred by an ex-pat.
Don't
- Never sign anything written in a foreign language that you do not fully understand.
- Never get pressurised into agreeing a sale during a visit.
- Don’t overstretch yourself financially: keep a running total of all costs.
- Don’t try to cut corners by going it alone just to save a few pounds by skipping on the necessary advice or checks.
